Time is an essential commodity and the currency with which we trade in the economy of life. With it we achieve and accomplish great feats: fame, success, glamor, experience, skills, knowledge, qualifications, among other things. More importantly, with it, we gain control of our lives. Every morning, we wake up to the miracle of being credited with 24 hours from God. But ironically, as important as time appears to be, it is the most ineffectively-used resource by mankind – largely wasted doing little or nothing!

Every single person whether rich or poor, tall or short, fat or thin, educated or uneducated, young or old, black or white, possess the same amount of time each day. How they use it is what differs: some people use theirs meaningfully, others squander away their own portion. If you can get a hold of your time, you definitely can get a hold of your life.
#1. Value your time
To begin with, you’ll need to attach importance, worth or value to your time. Many people don’t value their time at all, talkless of other people’s time. And you can see it in the kind of things they do with their time. Time is precious, so treat it like it is. Respect and appreciate other people’s time, that is the secret of gaining control.
To realize the value of one year, ask a student who failed a grade.
To realize the value of one month, ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby.
To realize the value of one week, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper.
To realize the value of one hour, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.
To realize the value of one minute, ask a person who missed the train.
To realize the value of one second, ask a person who just avoided an accident.
To realize the value of one millisecond, ask the person who won a silver medal in the Olympics.

#2. Schedule your priorities
Ensuring that things that matter most are not kept at the mercy of things which matter least is another way of gaining control of time. Stephen Covey explains that the key to effective time management is not to prioritize your schedule but to schedule your priorities. In practical terms, developing the habit of using a ‘to-do-list’ empowers you to maximize every second, minute, hour and day.

According to a business consultant, Ivy Lee, all you need to do is take a pad of paper and list the most urgent projects which confront you. Then, study the list and number them, assigning number one to the most important job, number two to the next most vital, and so on down the list. Beginning tomorrow, tackle number one and stay on it until it is finished before you move on to number two. Work on down the list. When the day is through, prepare a new list, again assigning top priority to the most important task still undone and so on down the list. Do this every day and see yourself gain control of your life.
#3. Treasure every moment
In conclusion, treasure every moment that you have because time waits for no one. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift that’s why it’s called the present.
